This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

We present a challenge for long-term couples who are fans of horror films: Sit down with your loved one and watch Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie has now made its streaming debut via Hulu. On the surface, it may seem like conventional body horror, but within Together lies a intense examination about the ways we decide to love each other.

A Directorial Debut Exploring The Nuances of Love

Together marks the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, partners that have been together for over ten years. Having wed in reality in 2017, the two stars bring a special spark to their characters, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The plot commences when Tim and Millie transition from the urban environment to the country for professional reasons. A familiar narrative setup, sure, but that’s primarily where the cliches end. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While hiking near their new home, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim tumble into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity takes hold of the duo. This force creates a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The whole movie is a methodically building fright fest, interspersing moments of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). The director skillfully blends these components seamlessly and delivers them in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they deftly portray countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his floundering music career inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and removed from his support system. He dreads the idea of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in his partner. This fear is amplified by the reality he can’t drive and relies on Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he avoids making Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie confront the sort of issues that come with any relationship over a long period. At their core, they still love one another. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of codependency and fully committing to another person, the metaphor avoids being hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama work together in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that single viewers have understood the narrative as a powerful case for staying single. Conversely, some couples having disagreements found that the film actually helped them make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could function as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your other half and state, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can undertake today.

Together is currently playing on Hulu at present.
