Space Traveler Reveals Emotional Distress In the Wake of Deluge of Online Abuse Following Journey

A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her emotional downturn after being subjected to a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

Amanda Nguyen – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also included celebrity crewmates.

The mission was widely scrutinized by some, who cited its expense and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the experience, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the intense backlash buried her dreams under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a online statement, describing a supportive conversation from a mission companion in the period after the flight.

She portrayed the press attention and digital reaction as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she confessed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Buried Under Misogyny

The researcher, who has dedicated her work to women's health research and performed experiments during the mission, said everything she had worked for – from her scientific research and years of training to the historic significance of her background – was drowned out under the tide of sexist vitriol.

She is most acclaimed for her groundbreaking advocacy fighting for justice for survivors of assault.

Her own aspiration for spaceflight was deferred after surviving a rape during her university years, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

The Fog Begins to Lift

In the time since reaching space, she reports that the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she thanked the supporters whose messages of encouragement helped save her. “You all saved me,” she said.

She added that amid the criticism, important benefits had resulted from the experience, such as spotlight on her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.

The Historic Journey

The self-operating spacecraft lifted off from its launch site in April, carrying the all-female team on a short trip that crossed the Kármán line of space.

The team of pioneers also included accomplished professionals from various fields.

The venture behind the flight is a private space firm established by a well-known tech mogul.
